Herman Leonard: master photographer

I had the privilege of seeing a show of Herman Leonard’s work here at SMC in Santa Monica last night. Many may recognize some of Leonard’s iconic portraits taken during his time immersed in the NYC jazz scene in the late 40′s and 50′s, like the image of Dexter Gordon seen here.

Photographing such notables as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis, Leonard became a fixture of the jazz scene, his photographs gracing the covers of more than 200 albums.

Photo Series: A Different Sea

The beach provides constant inspiration, but without seasons or weather in SoCal, it can also seem rather…well…the same all the time. Today, however, was cool and foggy from sunrise to sunset. A warm sunny day at the beach would have been a nice end of summer treat, but as a photographer, the calm, mysterious silence of the sea today was all that I could ask for.

MILK: best desk ever?

Clean. Simple. Functional. MILK.

I love my current desk (got it at Staples for around $100 — great deal!) with built-in sliding keyboard tray, two drawers, and two hidden hanging file cabinet wells. It’s simple, good amount of space, and has great storage. Perfect for limited space in a home office.

BUT, this thing really makes me want to upgrade. So nice and clean with super cleverly thought out nooks and trinkets. It’s great to see a desk that’s truly been designed from the ground up.

This beautiful piece and a great ergonomic chair and I’m set. Maybe it could increase productivity along with comfort? Maybe I’d have a hard time pulling myself away from my desk? Maybe that’s not such a good idea after all.

Free Font: Myndraine

Here’s a great free font from dafont.com. It’s called Myndraine, and it may be missing a few punctuation characters, but what is complete is very nicely done! And at a low price of FREE, there’s nothing to complain about. Do enjoy.

Tweet tweet tweet!

So I finally broke down and joined twitter. A few random circumstances collided and it happened today for a reason. And with an upcoming job to design twitter backgrounds I thought I should become reasonably competent at using the interface (i.e. having a clue what is going on on this crazy site of random, unorganized posts!). So there you have it. I now tweet at: http://twitter.com/aleklisefski
